Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art focused on challenges, and has been so throughout its history. Wherever his followers passed, in a certain way they had to prove the efficiency of the art they practiced.
According to historians, the history of soft art began in India where Buddhist monks developed a system for their defense, based on balance, body articulations and levers. Following the advance of Buddhism Jiu-Jitsu passed through China and then Japan where it developed and became popular.
From the late nineteenth century, some Japanese masters migrated to other continents living the teaching of Jiu-Jitsu and the challenges they faced. It was then that in 1915 the Japanese known as Count Koma settled in Belém do Pará, where a year later met Gastão Gracie.2_4
Gastão soon became a Jiu-Jitsu enthusiast, taking Carlos, the eldest of his eight children, to learn the art. Carlos, at age 15, was thin and found in Jiu-Jitsu a means of personal achievement. At 19, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, went through Belo Horizonte and São Paulo as a fighter and teacher, beating physically stronger opponents. In 1925 he returned to Rio de Janeiro where he opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy with the support of his brothers Oswaldo and Gastão, as well as assuming the creation of Jorge and Hélio with 14 and 12 years respectively.
Since then Carlos has dedicated himself to passing knowledge to his brothers adapting the technique to the less advanced physical characteristics of his family. He also introduced values ??such as philosophy and natural food being pioneer in the creation of gracie diet, which associates Jiu-Jitsu as a synonym of health.
